Good afternoon

HEADLINES: Potential for some very heavy thundery rain during late Friday (mainly evening and night) and Saturday – although current detail in location and rainfall amounts have a huge uncertainty.

WEATHER/IMPACTS:

Today/Thursday and most of Friday: The earlier rain has now all but cleared SW England – with tomorrow looking pretty dry and fine for most of SW England. There will be a little rain around on Friday afternoon, but at this stage it is not expected to be enough to cause any problems.

Late Friday/Saturday: This is the time when outbreaks of very heavy rain are forecast to move northwards across much of England and Wales, accompanied by thunder/lightning, and perhaps hail too. Currently it is anticipated the rainfall amounts for this event are likely to be heavy enough – in a very hit and miss nature – to  bring a risk of some significant instances of surface water flooding, but we aren’t able to pin down which particular counties are more or less at risk. The kind of impacts we may encounter are – localised flooding from surface water and fast responding rivers may affect prone properties and businesses. It is also possible on roads – accompanied by reduced visibility and spray, plus ponding of water – especially on known trouble and faster routes – which in turn may cause issues for drivers and lead to local disruption to travel with longer journey times. Localised flooding is also possible on railways, low lying fields, recreational land and car parks – and may affect large outdoor events. Lightning may also affect properties, infrastructure and businesses.

OTHER INFORMATION:

We currently have a Yellow Weather warning in place for this Heavy Rain and it covers the whole of England and Wales. Over the next few days we aim to reduce the area covered by the warning as we get more information and so it’s worth keeping up to date with the forecast and warnings. The current and any subsequent warnings are likely to be updated as we head up to this expected wet and thundery event and are available on Hazard Manager and http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings.
